Robotic Sample Changers

ISARA2 at MX3 beamline

A High-Precision Sample Changer for World-Class Nuclear Science

The Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) BRIGHT project will bring additional beamlines to Australia’s Synchrotron, a pillar of the country’s research and innovation activities. One of these is the MX3 beamline, a high-performance macromolecular crystallography beamline that will be capable of providing high-flux, microfocus X-rays for small and weakly diffracting protein crystals. ANSTO turned to Irelec for a sample changer capable of delivering optimal reliability, throughput, and ergonomics.

A high-performance system to meet drug discovery and other needs

One of ANSTO’s objectives was to achieve ultra-high-throughput on this new macromolecular crystallography beamline, to meet new needs and to free up its existing beamlines for other activities. The sample changer is a key contributor to overall throughput. Irelec’s ISARA2 system responded to this need.

With a 464-sample cryogenic storage capacity, 20-SBS-plate room-temperature storage capacity, and 8.5-second sample exchange time, the ISARA2 offers the high-throughput ANSTO was looking for.

It also offers several additional features:

  • Puck loading assistant
  • Plate loading assistant
  • Sample detection inside the Dewar with HD camera
  • Puck and sample barcode reading
  • Multi-sample cap (including non-spine) compatibility
