Bending system for SWING beamline

A custom-made design to level up existing beamline performances at a controlled cost

SOLEIL Synchrotron Light Source is planning a massive upgrade that will make its X-ray beams even brighter and expand its capacity with new beams. To take full advantage of the upgrade, the experimental capabilities of the synchrotron must also be updated. In order to contain costs, updates to existing beamlines should focus on optics while maintaining the current mechanical and vacuum systems in place. This constraint presents a significant technical challenge for the design of adaptable opto-mechanical systems.

Precision mechanical engineering serving science.

IRELEC mechanical bender is renowned for these performances. In this case, the flexibility of its design made possible the integration at SWING beamline.

IRELEC designed, supplied and commissioned a mechanical bending system to replace a bimorph mirror with two major challenges:

  • A very limited space to cope with the existing vacuum chamber.
  • A 10 kg maximum allowance weight imposed by the existing in-vacuum mechanics

The commissioning of the new optics demonstrated utmost performances and allows SWING beamline to look to the future with confidence.
