KB system for LRL-CAT beamline

A complete KB mirror system to keep pace with the Advanced Photon Source upgrade

Argonne National Laboratory’s Advanced Photon Source is getting a massive upgrade that will make its X-ray beams even brighter and expand its capacity with new beams. Drug companies are among the many users of the APS, and pharmaceutical giant Eli Lilly & Co. owns and operates one of the APS’s 35 sectors. Irelec was chosen to provide a complete mirror and bender system for the company’s LRL-CAT beamline.

Precision focusing mirrors needed to get the most out of the brighter beam

Eli Lilly & Co. needed focusing mirrors with very low tangential profiles and slope errors bent into plan-elliptical shapes to reap the full benefits of the upgraded APS beam.

IRELEC designed, supplied, and installed two mirrors, two bender systems, two vacuum chambers, and precision motion control electronics with unique capabilities:

  • A proprietary mechanical bender solution with integrated shape compensators to maximize the performance of the initial super polished mirror substrate, for nearly perfect (within a nanometer) elliptical profiles.
  • Innovative design features and calibration procedures that allow the bent mirrors to be installed “out of the box” with no recalibration.
